GRAPELAND — GRAPELAND – What started as a delayed nightmare due to a power outage ended up morphing into an epic tale kind of win for the Grapeland Sandies during Friday night’s maroon rivalry. Led by quarterback Jaques Faulk, the Sandies defeated the visiting Lovelady Lions 35-28 and grabbed their first win of the season.
Faulk led the heavy Sandie ground attack with 16 rushes for 141 yards, averaging out to 9 yards per carry. Things really got turned up for the second year quarterback during a fourth quarter third and eight situation, which he ran 34 yards to convert. Three plays later, Faulk hopped into the end zone to give the Sandies their first lead since the first quarter.
“I was just thinking that we had to get a good drive and we couldn’t give up,” said Faulk about the lead swapping drive. “So I never gave up, and kept going hard every play.”
Soon after Faulk’s touchdown, the Sandies regained possession of the ball from the Lions after holding them to a three and out. The ensuing drive ended with a Sandie ball carrier being tackled in his own end zone, which forfeited a safety to the Lions that push them ahead 28-27.
But that didn’t stop the Sandies. Clay Goolsby’s punt from the twenty landed safely in Lovelady hands, but it didn’t stay there for long. A few plays later, the Lions fumbled and had it returned for a very long Sandie touchdown by Patrick Walker. The two point conversion run by Riley Chipman was good and sealed off the Sandie win at 35-28.
“WEfence,” said a smiling Sandie Head Coach Shawn Brown. “We laugh because it’s the same kids. We’ll say, ‘Well, offense has got to so this, and defense has got to do that,’ and one of the kids, Shaun Walker, actually said, ‘No, coach, it’s the same kids [on both sides of the ball]. I said, ‘Ok, then it’s wefence.’ And that’s how we’re trying to play.
“Offense, defense, special teams we’re learning how to overcome adversity, become a team, and play hard,” continued the first year Sandie coach. “That’s what we’re trying to do.”
The win puts Grapeland at 1-2 on the season. Next week they’ll travel across the county line to take on the Elkhart Elks.
