H.S. Basketball: Stingy defense leads to points for Elks in blowout win


ELKHART — CAYUGA 78, Canton 60

The seventh-ranked Cayuga boys’ basketball team rebounded from Thursday’s road loss to Madisonville quickly, routing visiting Canton, 78-60, Friday.

For the second-straight contest, sophomore Chandler Rigdon led the way for the Wildcats. Rigdon followed up his 22-point performance in Thursday’s loss with a team-high 27 points Friday, including five three-pointers.

Preston Anderson added 18 points in the victory, while Deon Shofner had 16 and Keyshawn Jackson added eight.

Cayuga (13-6) has one more tune-up before district play starts. The Wildcats will host perennial Class 3A-power Mexia Tuesday, with games beginning at 6 p.m.


SLOCUM 73, Latexo 23

The third-ranked Slocum girls’ basketball team had an easy time Friday in its district opener, as the Mustangs moved to 20-1 on the season with a 73-21 rout of Latexo on the road.

Valerie Larkin had 16 points to lead Slocum, who led 44-6 at the half. Both Jordan Ives and Kelsee Webb had 14.

Landry Lane added 12 points for Slocum (20-1, 1-0), which continues district play Tuesday in Lovelady. Games begin at 5 p.m.
