Local Roundup: Palestine soccer sweeps visiting Hudson

— PHS soccer sweeps Hudson

One was a blowout and the other a nail-biter, but ultimately the Paletine soccer teams swept visiting Lufkin Hudson Tuesday.

The Palestine boys’ team won going way, topping the visiting Hornets 6-0 behind a hat-trick from Alonzo Cruz. Cruz also added an assist in the win.

Adrian Rodriguez had two goals and Peter Hamon added the sixth for the Wildcats in the district opener.

Brandon Fierro had two assists while Hamon, Paul Webb and Cass French each had one.

In the girls’ game, the Ladycats and Lady Hornets needed a shootout to decide things after a 1-1 end to things in normal and extra time.

Xochitl Zavala scored Palestine’s lone goal during normal play, before Danielle Harroff, Gabby Meyers and Zavala all netted their penalties during the shootout.

Playing in goal, Nidia Umanzor only allowed two in to preserve the victory.

Next up for Palestine will be games against Nacogdoches. Varisty games are set for Friday at Wildcat Stadium, starting with the girls at 5:30 p.m.

Junior varsity games will be in Nacogdoches with girls action at 5:30 p.m.

Predator Hunt

The Tucker Volunteer Fire Department will host its 5th annual Predator Hunt tournament beginning Friday and running through Sunday.

The tournament, which rewards teams with points for various animals killed, boasts a grand prize valued at $1,000.

The cost to enter is $100 per team, with optional entries available for hunters wanting to be judged in the hunts for the big coyote, big bobcat and more.

YMCA baseball/softball sign-ups

Registration for the Palestine YMCA’s 2013 baseball and softball seasons are under way.

This year, the Y is partnering with the Texas Teen-Age program, and the Y teams will participate in both the East Texas Fast Pitch and Elkhart Summer leagues.

Registration is $40 for Y members and $50 for non-members, with registration open until March 6. From March 6 to March 15, last registration is open with a $10 late fee.

Financial assistant is available for those who qualify. The financial aid application deadline is March 1.

The leagues are open to childre ages 4 to 12, with age determined by how old the child will be on April 30 for baseball, and how old they were on Jan. 1 for softball.

Along with registering at the Y, the league’s will host two sign-up dates with Hibbett’s sporting good stores, located in the Palestine Plaza. The first date will be Feb. 23, with a second on March. 2. Both of these sign-up events will be from noon until 4 p.m., with registrants receiving a 20 percent off coupon from Hibbett.
