H.S. Football: Game Balls for Week 10 - Elkhart, Cayuga shine bright in end-of-season games

Palestine Herald-Press

PALESTINE — Elkhart and Cayuga are both coming into playoff week with last-week-of-the -season wins.

Both teams will play on Thursday night and are likely looking to these players for what they hope will be a winning performance.

This week in Elkhart’s 47-31 win against Trinity, the running back shined bright and ran the ball 35 times for 378 yards and six touchdowns.

His touchdowns of 24, 5, 25, 1, 28 and 75 yards show just how versatile Wilson is.

When the Elks take on Godley in Corsicana on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m., look for Wilson to run the ball as much as he has been all season long.

What Wilson did in Friday night’s victory against Trinity couldn’t have been possible without the help of a stellar defensive unit.

Three players for the Elkhart defense stood out.

Austin Sheridan, a junior defensive end, finished the game with 11 total tackles — two for a loss, two sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Chris Box finished the night with 12 total tackles — two of which were for a loss, two sacks and a forced fumble.

Gaje Smock finished the night with 20 total tackles — two for a loss, and he had a sack as well.

Being quarterback of a team that runs the ball 81 percent of the time in a game can be tough to manage. But, when that quarterback gets in on the action, too, there’s a Game Ball to be earned.

John Vickery of Cayuga kept the Cayuga offense moving along in a 66-26 blowout of Gateway Charter.

Vickery finished the night with a solid passing performance of 7-12 for 117 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran the ball six times for 34 yards and two touchdowns.

Senior Payton Wallace also helped Cayuga on defense with five total tackles, which led the Wildcats, and he had a 13-yard interception return for Cayuga.
