H.S. Softball: Slocum, Grapeland dominate 20-A all-district teams

During the 2013 season, the Slocum and Grapeland softball teams dominated the competition in District 20-A.

Fittingly, the two squads also dominated the district’s all-district squads released this week.

Slocum pitcher Kelcie “Doodle” Selman was named the district’s Most Valuable Player after she helped the Lady Mustangs to the district crown.

Grapeland first baseman Shelby Bruner shared Offensive Player of the Year honors with Lovelady’s Cheyenne Meadors, while Slocum catcher Brooke January was named the Defensive Player of the Year.

Grapeland pitcher Baylee Lumbreraz was named the district’s Pitcher of the Year, while Slocum coach David Ives was named the Coach of the Year.

Seven local players earned first team honors. From Slocum, first baseman Kamron Vickers, short stop Valarie Larkin and outfielders Brice Sizemore and Kaytie Jones were named to the first team.

For Grapeland, second baseman Julie Riess, shortstop Jayde Westbrook and outfielder Shelby Frauenberger all earned first team honors.

Slocum second baseman Jordan Ives, third baseman Kristen Cumby and outfielder Tiffany Claiborn were all named to the second team, as were Grapeland catcher Clara Shaw and outfielder Amy Brown.

Slocum’s Shelby McLeod and Katelynn Hogan, and Grapeland’s Atlana Watson were named honorable mention.
