SLOCUM — The Class 1A Slocum Lady Mustang basketball team was defeated by Class 2A Central Heights by a score of 49 to 45.
Central Heights came out running with a high-pressure defense and rolled to a 10-0 lead before Slocum called a timeout to regroup.
With two of Slocum's starting guards on the bench, Slocum came back to score six points in the first quarter to 14 for Central.
In the second quarter Central Heights continued to dominate the game and had the lead to 20 points before Slocum could rally and cut the lead in half. Halftime saw Central Heights with an 11-point lead.
In the third quarter, Central Heights continued its high pressure game and held Slocum to 11 points to their 14, spreading their lead to 14 points going into the final quarter.
With their backs against the wall and facing a blowout by Central Heights, the Lady Mustang guards came out shooting in the fourth quarter and swarmed the bigger Central Heights players who began to turn over the ball.
Constant defensive pressure by Slocum cut the Central Heights lead to two points and put Slocum at the free throw line with an opportunity to tie the game with less than two minutes left.
A missed free throw by Slocum and a fast break by Central Heights put the score for Central to 49.
With time running out for the Lady Mustangs, missed shots sealed the game.
Slocum scored 18 points in the final quarter to 8 for Central Heights.
The high scorers for Slocum were Valerie Larkin with 14 and Jordan Ives with 13.
