H.S. Baseball/Softball: Cayuga wins, sets up matchup to decide title

Needing a victory Friday to set-up a de facto district title game this week, the Cayuga baseball team turned to its most-trusted performer.

And Chantz Holland performed.

The Vernon College-commit threw the Wildcats second-straight no-hitter, as Cayuga topped Martin’s Mill 14-0 Friday.

With the victory, Cayuga (19-3, 12-1) set up a huge game against rival Kerens (15-3, 12-1) for the District 19-A title Thursday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Cayuga High School.

Friday, Holland struck out 13 and walked only one, moving his strikeout-to-walk ratio to a staggering 12-1 (84-7).

Jaret Walthall led the Cayuga offense with a three-run home run in the fourth inning, while Payton Wallace, Hunter Jenkins and John Vickery all had multi-hit games and each scored twice in the victory.

Groesbeck 4, PALESTINE 2

The Palestine baseball team dropped its second-straight game Friday, losing on the road to Groesbeck, 4-2.

The loss put the Goats in the driver’s seat for District 19-3A’s second-place spot, and leaves Palestine still slightly unsure of its postseason future.

But, all that can change today, when the Wildcats host Mexia. With Fairfield’s loss Friday, Palestine is now in position to lock-up a playoff spot with a win in today’s game.

First pitch is set for 5 p.m. at Palestine High School.

Central Heights 7, ELKHART 6

Even without a spot in the postseason at stake, the Elkhart softball team looked prime to defeat playoff-bound Central Heights Friday.

The Lady Elks — who were eliminated from playoff contention early last week when Central Heights defeated Groveton — led 5-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.

But, the Lady Blue Devils plated four runs in the frame and Elkhart was only able to get one back in the seventh as Elkhart fell, 7-6.

Courtney Lindsey led all players with four hits in the game, driving in three of the Lady Elks runs in the process. Tiffany Rosas added three hits in the loss.

Catie Bridges took the loss inside the circle for Elkhart, which ends the season 14-16 overall.
