Earlier in the postseason, Elkhart star third baseman Jacob Cheatham legged out his 17th triple of the 2013 season.
It was an important one.
With the hit, Cheatham passed Steve Kopepasah and Alex Ortiz for the national record for triples in a season, according to the National Federation of High School associations.
“It’s awesome. I’d be lying to say it’s not awesome,” Cheatham said. “But really, there’s only one thing on my mind and that’s the state championship. That’s the main goal.”
Ortiz hit his 16 in 2009 for Rochester East in New York, while Kopepasah hit 16 in 1976 for Marlow (Okla.).
The 17 exceeds the state record by three, held by Lubbock Montery’s Stephen Reed.
SMITH SELECTED TO ALL-STAR GAME
Elkhart catcher and future Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack Levi Smith also received a big honor recently.
The senior was selected to play in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association (TSHBCA) 1A-3A all-star game.
The game will be played the week after the state tournament at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock, and features the top seniors from all classifications in two games — 1A-3A and 4A-5A.
