On Thursday night, the Westwood Panthers’ boys basketball team took on the No. 10 team in Class 1A DI and fought hard.
Although the Panthers lost to San Augustine 63-54, there was much improvement from the game at home against Oakwood Tuesday.
J.J. Turner finished the game with 26 points for the Panthers, which led the team. Westwood coach Scott Nettles said he was proud of his team’s performance and said it was an unfortunate draw of opponents for the Panthers to start the season.
“We played well, they just wore us down,” Nettles said. “We had them within a few points heading into the fourth quarter, and we gave up a late run in the fourth with about two and a half minutes left.”
Westwood (1-5) scored 13, 13, 13 and 15 in each quarter to San Augustine’s 14, 14, 14 and 21.
“I thought we played a lot better than the egg we put up against Oakwood the other night,” Nettles said. “I definitely think we’re making strides so far, though.”
Other scorers included Travion Hicks with four, Sam Carlisle with eight, D.J. Hicks with five, Damontrey House with eight, Dejuan Hickerson with two and Korbin Boles with one.
Depending on the weather, Westwood is set to finish the Huntington tournament today.
