— Seven other soccer teams from around East Texas and beyond will join the Palestine boys soccer team at Wildcat Stadium this week for the third annual Wildcat Classic.

Play in the tournament begins today with group play, which will continue into tomorrow. Finals will be held Saturday.

The host-Wildcats open the tournament at 10:30 a.m. today when they take on Lancaster in the tournament’s second game. Whitehouse and Kaufman will open the event at 9 a.m. Those four teams make up Group A.

Palestine plays against at 5:30 p.m. today when they take on Kaufman in the nightcap, and the Wildcats conclude pool play at 4 p.m. Friday when they take on Whitehouse.

Group B is made up of Corsicana, Athens, Mexia and Center.

Teams will receiver six points for a win and up to three points based on goal differential. There also will be a point for a shutout, bringing the maximum points available in each game to 10.

A tie results in three points for each team, unless that game ends in a scoreless tie, with each team then getting four points.

Saturday, the fourth-place teams from each group will meet at 9 a.m., followed by the third-place teams from each group taking the field at 11 a.m.

The third-place match — between the groups’ second-place teams — will kick-off at 1 p.m., followed by the championship at 3 p.m.

For a complete schedule of the tournament, see The Baseline at the right of the page.

Also competing in a tournament this weekend will be the Palestine girls’ soccer team, which travels to Athens for the 2013 Lady Hornet Cup.

Palestine opens the event against the host-Lady Hornets at 8:30 a.m. today, and will play again at 2:45 p.m. against Kaufman. All tournament games are being played at Athens’ Bruce Field.

Palestine plays back-to-back games Friday, first at 11 a.m. against Hudson and then again at 1:30 p.m. against Corsicana.

The top-two teams from each pool in the tournament move on to the championship matches Saturday, where the second-place teams will face off for third-place, and the first-place teams will play for the championship.
