H.S. Boys Basketball: Slocum, Lovelady to meet for 4th time Saturday

A furious fourth-quarter comeback fell just short for the Slocum boys basketball team Tuesday, as the Mustangs fell to Lovelady, 61-60.

With that win, Lovelady tied Slocum for third-place in District 20-A, Division I, and the two teams will meet against at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grapeland High School to decide who gets the district’s third playoff spot.

It’ll be the fourth meeting of the season between the two rivals, with all three previous games being decided by no more than three points.

Slocum led 38-32 at the half Tuesday, but Lovelady took a 51-46 lead into the fourth quarter. Slocum almost came all the way back, but fell just short.

7 p.m. Saturday, UT-Tyler

Two of the area’s premier boys’ basketball programs face off Saturday in playoff warm-up action, as the Class 2A No. 19 Westwood Panthers take on Class 1A, Division II No. 8 Oakwood.

The game will be at UT-Tyler’s Patriot Center as part of the annual Playoff Preview event. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

The two teams played earlier this season in Oakwood’s season-opener, with Westwood handily beating the short-handed Panthers.
