H.S. Softball: Slocum's Brooke January signs letter of intent to play at Paris Junior College

Paris, Texas will play host to a local softball player this coming fall as she continues her career at the collegiate level.

Slocum’s Brooke January will attend Paris Junior College to play softball in the fall, and her coach David Ives said he couldn’t be more ecstatic about her decision and about her opportunity to play at the next level.

“I’m real happy for her,” Ives said. “We’re really proud of her. Anytime you have somebody that can go on to the next level, that’s a great thing. And you secretly hope that you had something to do with that. But I’m very proud of Brooke. She’s worked hard her whole time here, and she deserves it.”

Moving on to college can be a stressful and scary situation for some athletes, but January said she will take her favorite memories of playing softball at Slocum with her to Paris.

“I think my favorite moments about being here at Slocum have come with being on the field with Coach Ives,” January said. “I enjoyed playing softball with him for the past four years. He means a lot to me. Just being out on the field and doing what I love were my best memories of high school.”

Softball has been a huge part of January’s life at Slocum, but she also knows that playing at college will be a different experience.

“I’m excited to play at the next level because I’m ready to go out there and give it my all,” January said. “I’m excited to get out there on the field and also to get my education. I’m also glad that they offered me anything because it’s just so great. I’m just really happy for that.”

Some special moments that January will leave behind in the fall include being named 2013 Defensive Player of the Year for District 20-A and being on Slocum’s team that won the District 20-A championship in 2013 over Grapeland.

But before January can switch her mindset to playing for Paris Junior College, she will be in the high school mindset as Slocum looks to bring home the 2014 District Title and maybe more this year.
