New hirings are taking place across the Dogwood Circle this summer, with Elkhart Independent School District adding a new volleyball coach and a boys' basketball coach to its coaching lineup for 2014-15.
After six years at Eustace and last season at Latexo, Chad Martinez is taking over the Elkhart boys’ basketball program — seeking an exciting season coming up.
“I’ll be doing junior high football, the head basketball coach and an assistant track coach,” Martinez said. “I know that for the basketball team at least, they’ve had good athletes in the past. I’m looking forward to having some athleticism to work with. From everyone that I’ve talked to, they all talk about how hard those kids work, which is always a positive thing to have.
“You always want the kids to be positive and coachable,” he added. “And from talking to people, that’s all I’ve heard about them is that they’re good, hard-working kids.”
As far as a playing style goes, Martinez said he doesn’t know for sure the exact type of players he has to work with, but he knows that he wants to do a semi-fast-paced offense.
“We’ll need to see what we have personnel-wise, but I like to run the ball up the court,” Martinez said. “It’s more of a controlled-break and not so much of a fast-break type of offense.
“You want to push the ball up and see what you get,” he added. “I know the kids will like that and buy into that. And defensively, I just want to be solid in whatever we end up doing.
“Hopefully we can run a little bit of man-to-man defense if we can, otherwise we’ll have to run a little bit of other types depending on what our team is like.”
