H.S. Girls' Basketball: Westwood falls to Athens to open GETSO
By JAYSON LARSON CNHI
The Westwood Lady Panthers opened the Great East Texas Shootout with a 51-39 loss to the Athens Lady Hornets Thursday.
The Lady Panthers (7-6) fell behind, 10-0, in the first quarter but closed the lead to 29-22 at the half thanks to a barrage of close-range buckets and offensive rebounds. Athens was ahead, 23-11, when Mi'Kayla Benson caught fire with about three-and-a-half minutes to go before halftime. Benson scored eight of the Lady Panthers' final 11 points, and her wide-open layup with 50 seconds left capped a 7-0 Westwood run.
Westwood was never able to get to within more than six points of the lead, however, due to cold shooting and an inability to slow down Athens senior guard Demi Cumby. Westwood head coach Brandi McEnturff rotated three players into the game to guard Cumby, urging each to keep her away from the ball. The tactic didn't work, and Cumby scored five of the Lady Hornets' first seven points of the fourth quarter, pushing Athens' lead back to double digits. Cumby finished with 24 points.
The Lady Panthers were led by Benson's 14. Post Marialle Boles scored all 11 of her points in the first half, as she faced double teams in the paint over the final two quarters.McEnturff's club won't play again until 8 a.m. Friday.
