H.S. Softball: Cayuga, Elkhart place atop their respective weekend tournaments

PALESTINE — Over the weekend, Cayuga and Elkhart both placed well in their respective tournaments.

Cayuga was able to come out on top and place first in the Slocum Tournament.

The game scores for each match were Cayuga 3 Neches 2, Cayuga 20 Eustace 0, Cayuga 4 Westwood 3, Cayuga 1 Slocum 1 and Cayuga 13 and Eustace 0.

Kimberly Hughes pitched each game for Cayuga and  recorded 37 strikeouts, and gave up just one walk, 16 hits and six runs off 95 batters faced.

At the plate, Hughes had 15 attempts with seven hits (four doubles, one triple and one home run), three walks, six RBIs and batted .533 for tournament.

Maci Poland was .500 for the tournament with six hits, seven walks and scored 11 runs.

Presley Luce hit .466 for the tournament with eight hits, two doubles, one triple and two RBIs.

Cayuga’s next matches will be in the Mildred Tournament this Thursday through Saturday. Cayuga moves to 6-1-1 on the season now.

For Elkhart, it was faced with the Brownsboro Tournament and placed second after losing a tough match in the championship, 1-0.

In each game, Elkhart played tough, close matches starting with Brownsboro. Elkhart won 1-0, Camryn Rucker pitched with two strikeouts. Courtney Lindsey was 2-3, single, double, Tiffany Rosas went 1-3, single, Robin Grant went 2-3, two doubles RBI and Courtney Cheatham went 2-3, 2 singles.

Against Liberty-Eylau, Elkhart won 6-5, Camryn Rucker pitched with five strikeouts. Courtney Lindsey was 2-3, single, double, Tiffany Rosas was 2-3 single, double, RBI, Robin Grant was 2-3, single, double, and two RBIs, Courtney Cheatham was 1-3, double and Megan Davis was 3-3, three singles and an RBI.

Against Brookhill, Elkhart won 2-1, Camryn Rucker pitched with seven strikeouts. Courtney Lindsey was 2-2, with two singles, Robin Grant was 1-2, single, RBI, Courtney Cheatham was 1-2, single and Sheridan Adair was 1-2, double.

Against Commerce, Elkhart won 3-1, Camryn Rucker pitched with three strikeouts. Catie Bridges was 2-3, single, triple, Robin Grant was 1-3, single, Courtney Lindsey was 2-3, two singles, Sheridan Adair had 1-3, double, two RBIs.

In the championship game against Bullard, Elkhart lost 1-0‚Äč, Camryn Rucker pitched with one strikeout. Courtney Lindsey went 1-3 with a single.

Elkhart is now 9-2 on the season and will take on Central Heights tonight.
