Elks end football season with 47-14 bidistrict loss to Godley

After a tough-fought 7-3 regular season and a berth in the 2A-Division I playoffs, the Elkhart Elks laid down their gear after falling to the Godley Wildcats (8-3) 47-14.

The cold East-Central Texas air settled in on Tiger Stadium in Corsicana before either team took the field, and the slight breeze and mist added a little flavor to what would become a wild night for both teams.

Godley managed a quick 35-yard touchdown by way of the footwork of Ian Aguirre early in the first. With the ensuing extra point by place kicker Rachael Evans, Godley grasped a 7-0 lead. An Elkhart fumble at their opponent's 35 would cede possession back over to the Wildcats. A few plays and a quarter-turn later, Godley would attempt a field goal to no avail, leaving the score at 7-0 in their favor.

The rest of the second quarter would showcase Godley dominance as they would score on a 20-yard run by halfback Taylor Luce and on a 40-yard dunk from quarterback Aguirre to Devin Boldin to jump even further ahead at 21-0.

With the Elks receiving the initial kickoff during the second half, all eyes fell on the Elk phenom Jeffery Wilson to help bring them out of the hole they found themselves in. Toward the end of the third, Wilson, while playing defense, scooped up a loose Wildcat ball and ran in it 72 yards down the home sideline for a touchdown. As the Elks celebrated, though, the play was called back due to a hold. They were never able to convert and regain momentum off of the play.

It wouldn't be until the end of the final quarter that Elkhart would finally change their ticker on the scoreboard as Wilson ran 55 yards for a nearly untouched touchdown. The kick after would fail, and Elkhart remained behind 41-6.
