Palestine's Owens picks TCU

PALESTINE — A whirlwind recruitment came to a resolution for Palestine star Jarrell Owens Tuesday.

Owens — who landed on the radar of major college programs after some standout performances at camps this spring — committed to Texas Christian University.

Owens’ commitment to the Horned Frogs was first reported by ESPN Oklahoma reporter Bob Przbylo.

“They have a great coaching staff and the coaches are real cool,” Owens said. “I just like everything about TCU from the way they coach their defense to the coaching staff. It was a good fit for me.”

The Horned Frogs were one of four offers that Owens currently holds, and one of two — along with Texas Tech — from Big 12 schools. Owens also holds offers from the University of Louisiana-Monroe and Texas State.

While other schools may still come calling as Owens proves himself in his senior season, he said he was more than ready to “pull the trigger” for TCU.

“It was a hard decision for me, but I wanted to go ahead and pull the trigger,” he said.

Projected to play on the defensive side of the ball at either defensive end or outside linebacker, Owens was limited in 2012 thanks to nagging injuries. Still, the senior-to-be still ran for a team-high eight touchdowns in helping Palestine back to the postseason.

In 2013, Owens is expected to see more time on the defensive side of the ball in 2013, along with getting some snaps at both running back and receiver.

Now that he’s got the commitment to the Horned Frogs locked in, he said he’s ready to concentrate on his senior season.

“I don’t have to worry about it,” he said. “I can just play football and try and win a championship for my team.”

Owens is the second Wildcat to commit in less than a week, after Brian Thlang gave his pledge to Louisiana-Monroe last Wednesday.

Owens’ commitment means half of the Dogwood Circle’s quartet of major recruits have made decisions. Palestine running back Ben Luckett and Elkhart running back Jeffrey Wilson both remain undecided.

Luckett holds a ULM offer, while Wilson has offers from ULM, North Texas and New Mexico State.
