The Palestine YMCA will host a youth swim meet Saturday at the Palestine Aquatic Center, adjacent to the Y, starting at 8:45 a.m.
The Piranha meet is the first of its kind in five years to be hosted in Palestine.
Part of the East Texas Summer Swim League, the Piranhas will be competing against teams from Tyler, Longview, Nacogdoches, Lufkin, Paris and Marshall this season.
Meets will take place every Saturday during the season, which runs from June through July.
Piranhas coach Katherine Newton said Saturday’s meet will be one of the smaller regular meets in the league, but encourages residents to come out and support the athletes.
“In an Olympic year, swimming becomes highly popular, so you have an opportunity to see local kids doing what you’re going to see in Omaha later this month for the Olympic trials,” Newton said. “You can see the beginnings of the Olympians starting here.”
Concessions will be available at the meet, and there is no cost to enter.
