H.S. Basketball Roundup: Larkin, Lane lead Slocum past Central Heights

The Slocum girls’ basketball team continued its perfect start to the 2012-2013 season Tuesday, leading almost from the opening tip to capture a 56-44 victory over Class 2A Central Heights, 56-44.

The 25th-ranked Lady Blue Devils scored the game’s first basket, but the 13th-ranked Lady Mustangs answered with a 5-0 run and never again relinquished the lead.

Slocum blew the game open in the third quarter, when the Lady Mustangs outscored Central Heights 17-9 to turn what had been a four-point Slocum lead into a 12-point advantage.

Valarie Larkin had 18 points to lead the Lady Mustangs (8-0), with 12 of those coming via three-point shots.

Landry Lane had 16 points, hitting five three-pointers, and Kelsee Webb had nine. Brice Sizemore added seven and Jordan Ives had five for the Lady Mustangs in the win.

Slocum is off the rest of the holiday break, and returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Centerville.

CAYUGA 59, Overton 54

The Cayuga girls’ basketball team got 21 points from Madison Spears and a double-double from Shawnta Knox, as the Ladycats opened up their season with a 59-54 win over Overton on the road.

Knox had 15 points and 11 rebounds in the victory for Cayuga, while Kylee Cross added 10 points of her own.

Cayuga (1-0) returns to action Tuesday, when it travels to Grand Saline. Games begin at 5 p.m.


WESTWOOD 74, New Summerfield 51

The Westwood boys’ basketball team got its first victory of the year Tuesday, topping visiting New Summerfield 74-51.

J.J. Turner had 24 points to lead the Panthers, while L.J. Hutchison had 15 and Josh Denby had 12.

Dra Ross added seven for the Panthers (1-1), who travel to Class 3A Mexia Tuesday, with games beginning at 5 p.m. The Blackcats are ranked ninth by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.
