H.S. Basketball: Westwood girls fall to Jacksonville by one point

The Westwood girls’ basketball team couldn’t overcome a middle-of-the-game lull, and fell to Jacksonville 45-44 at home Tuesday.

The Maidens outscored the Lady Panthers 26-19 in the second and third quarters, erasing what had been a 13-7 lead for Westwood after the first en route to the narrow victory.

Marialle Boles had a team-high 13 points for Westwood while also pulling down a team-best nine rebounds.

Natali Muniz had 11 points, three steals and three assists in the loss, while Jemelia Thomas added eight points and Mi’Kayla Benson had seven.

Benson also finished with eight rebounds, while Thomas had four boards and two assists.

Westwood (4-4) opens up the Teague tournament at 6:30 p.m. today against Hubbard, and returns home Tuesday to host Neches.

Mexia 67, WESTWOOD 65

Despite having four players score in double-figures, the Westwood boys’ basketball team fell to perennial Class 3A power Mexia Tuesday, 67-65.

J.J. Turner had 16 points to lead the Panthers, who played the game without their best inside presence, Dra Ross.

Jacobee Newton had 15 and L.J. Hutchison added 14 for the balanced Westwood offense, while Chris Thompson had 11.

The Panthers (1-2) head to Huntington beginning today to play in a tournament. They open the event at 7:30 p.m. against West.
