H.S. Baseball: Trio of locals named to THSBCA all-state teams

Three local players were named some the state’s best baseball players Monday by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association (THSBCA).

Elkhart teammates Levi Smith (catcher) and Jacob Cheatham (third base) were both named first team players on the Class 2A team, while Cayuga pitcher Chantz Holland was named a first teamer in Class 1A.

Smith, who will play his college baseball at Stephen F. Austin University, was one of two first team catchers after hitting .435 for the Elks this season.

A second-team catcher a year ago, Smith threw out 50 percent of potential base stealers in 2013 en route to his third-straight Defensive Player of the Year award from Elkhart’s district.

Cheatham hit a monstrous .556 in 2013 to raise his career batting average to .550 in his four years at Elkhart.

The Cisco College-commit also set a national high school record with 17 triples during the season, earning Offensive Player of the Year honors from the District 19-2A coaches.

Holland did it all for Cayuga in 2013 en route to his first team pitcher’s spot on the Class 1A team.

The Vernon College-bound Holland was 13-3 on the mound with a 0.83 ERA and 137 strikeouts in 72 innings. He also batted .519 on the year with 32 RBI.
