Local Roundup: Frankston's Paul captures state powerlifting title

Frankston’s Raven Paul is a state champion.

The Frankston High School sophomore lifted 1,080 pounds to win the 220-plus weight class at the state powerlifting meet over the weekend in Corpus Christi.

Paul didn’t have the top lift in any of the three categories — bench, squat and deadlift — but topped her closest competitor by 35 pounds for the only top spot that mattered, the one atop the podium.

It’s the second-straight medal at the state meet for Paul, who finished second last year. Paul upped her total weight by 110 pounds this year.

Westwood’s Kierra Butler finished fifth in the 220-pound class.

H.S. SOCCER

The final week of the regular season looks as if it’ll be an important one for the Palestine boys’ and girls’ soccer teams.

The boys enter the week tied for first place in District 35-4A with Nacogdoches with winnable games this week against Center (7:45 p.m. tonight) and Diboll on Friday. Both of those games are at home.

If the Wildcats happen to lose one of the remaining two games, they could fall into a three-way tie for second with Jacksonville and Center.

The girls’ clinched a playoff spot last weekend with a win over Jacksonville, and are currently alone in second-place, two points clear of both Jacksonville and Hudson, who are tied for third.

Jacksonville and Hudson play tonight, and tied in their first meeting. If that happens again, then Palestine would clinch second-place with a victory tonight over Center. That game is at Wildcat Stadium and kicks off at 6:30 p.m.
