A matchup of two local teams turned into a scoring match between two local seniors Monday.
Preston Anderson and Cayuga held off a late charge from Chris Thompson and Westwood in Cayuga, earning a 68-66 victory. Anderson finished with 45 points to lead Cayuga, which moved to 12-5 with the victory.
In the loss, Thompson had 30 points to lead Westwood, which fell to 12-7 with the defeat.
Cayuga jumped out to an early 20-8 lead after the first quarter, but Westwood managed to cut that lead to nine heading into halftime.
After a high-scoring third quarter saw the Wildcats extend their lead to 13 heading into the final frame, Westwood made its final push.
The Panthers held Cayuga to 10 points in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t quite complete the comeback.
Chandler Rigdon had 12 points for Cayuga in support of Anderson, while Dra Ross had nine and both Josh Denby and L.J. Hutchison had seven for Westwood.
Cayuga (12-5) has two games remaining before they kick-off district play, both against Class 3A teams.
The Wildcats, currently ranked seventh in Class 1A, Division I by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, travel to Madisonville today for a 1 p.m. tip, and will then welcome in Mexia Tuesday.
Even with the loss, Westwood wrapped up a successful holiday run with the game, finishing 2-2 with its losses coming to Cayuga and 1A, Division I No. 4 Grapeland, both in close contests.
The Panthers’ two victories came over Trinity and district-rival Crockett at the Lovelady Christmas tournament, where the Panthers took home third-place.
Westwood (12-7, 2-0) returns to District 19-2A play Friday when the Panthers travel to Central Heights to take the on Blue Devils (11-11, 1-1) in a high-profile district contest.
H.S. GIRLS BASKETBALL
CAYUGA 73, ELKHART 41
With its full-compliment of players back on the court following a short-handed end to the Tenaha tournament, Cayuga made easy work of visiting Elkhart Tuesday, 73-41.
Madison Spears had 18 points and Madyson Gunnels added 14, while Shawnta Knox had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Molly Griffey had 10 points and six steals, and Danielle Anderson had eight points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Shelby Luce added seven points in the victory.
Stats from Elkhart were unavailable at press time.
Cayuga (11-7) travels to Kerens Friday to take on the second-ranked Lady Bobcats. Elkhart travels to Groveton to continue district play as well.
