H.S. Volleyball: Cayuga, Elkhart both win key district matches

CAYUGA — Spike after spike kept going down for Cayuga as Danielle Anderson and the Ladycats beat Wortham in straight sets, 26-24, 25-22 and 25-15.

In the first set, there was a point where the score was 24-19 in favor of Wortham, and Cayuga’s backs were against the wall.

Then came in one of two seniors on the squad, Anderson. The Ladycats continued setting up spikes for her to kill, and she pounced on the opportunities.

The Ladycats came back from down five to score seven straight points and get the victory for the first set. Cayuga coach Magen Humphreys said she was proud of her team’s ability to stick together as a team and fight back during that tough portion of the match.

“We’ve always been a team to really fight hard,” Humphreys said. “And we’ve shown that all year. We did have our backs against the wall, but we always know that we’re going to fight. These girls have never let each other down the entire season, so it’s not something that I’ve been able to put in them. That comeback mentality is something that they just have.”

In the second set, Cayuga was able to push the tempo for most of the set, but Wortham wasn’t going to go down without a fight.

The two teams went point-for-point after Cayuga had started out strong and Wortham came back. The Ladycats were able to win the second set, which ultimately put the match out of reach for Wortham.

Once the third set started, Cayuga pulled out to a big lead, and it never went away. The Ladycats pushed the game along quickly and closed out Wortham by winning 25-15.

“I’m so proud of these girls,” Humphreys said. “This win puts us a little bit ahead in District, which is good. Wortham is a great team. They gave us a good challenge to overcome. This is the best our district has been in a long time, which helps us as we head toward the playoffs.

“We had a slow start, but we kicked it into gear thanks to our seniors,” she added. “Danielle Anderson has been doing a good job for us offensively and defensively. Our libero, Cory McCulloch, we can always count on her passing. So, I’m just really proud of the way we played tonight.”
