PALESTINE — Westwood is aiming for its second win of the season and its first district win as the team faces Trinity at home Friday.

Westwood has seen arguably the best two teams its faced the entire season in the past two weeks.

In the first match, the Panthers lost to Franklin in a match that was close until the second half.

Last Friday, a similar foe was on the Panthers’ schedule as they faced off with Teague.

“We knew coming into the game they were a very well balanced team, and we were going to have to keep the ball away from them,” Westwood Coach Roger Mays said. “It wasn’t like the week before against Franklin when we were able to load up the box and just concentrate on their run game.”

With every loss comes a few learning experiences.

Mays said even though the Panthers lost this past Friday, there was a good amount of things to learn from the game.

Westwood was able to keep the game close until the second half. After the first quarter, the score was just 14-7 in favor of Teague, and the game was still in reach at halftime with the score of 28-7. After halftime, though, the Panthers just didn’t have enough juice to keep up with one of the best teams in Class 2A. Teague scored 34 points in the second half to secure the 62-7 win against the Panthers.

“We were able to move the chains effectively and keep their offense off the field in the first half by executed our game plan and felt like our offensive line stepped up and played well,” Mays said. “We just got a little worn down in the second half.”
