PALESTINE — Having already clinched a playoff spot, the Frankston Indians are coming into Friday night's game with high hopes.
Coach Matt Nally said his team has been performing well in the different stages of the season so far.
“We put every season in three categories: preseason, regular season and post season,” Nally explained. “Our goal is to finish all of them to the best of our abilities and play like Indians until the final horn. We believe that our kids believe in this and we preach having momentum going into the playoffs.”
On Friday, Frankston will play a tough opponent in that of West Rusk. The Indians and Raiders are similar team on paper, so the matchup should be one to watch for.
“West Rusk is a good football team that has dealt with injuries and other issues,” Nally said. “Their record is not a indication of the true team that they are. We will have to show up and play or they can beat us. They have a great running back in George Anthony who we will have to contain and score when we get the opportunity.”
Last season, the Indians took care of business against the Raiders, winning 42-22.
This season, the Indians aim to have a similar performance and should be led by the trio that has lead them all season: quarterback Ozzie Buckner, running back Oran Jenkins and wide receiver Kendrick Rogers.
“Ozzie, Kendrick, and Oran are a great tandem on an even better team,” Nally said. “We ask Ozzie to do so much at the quarterback position that he has surpassed our expectations as a leader and as a football player. Kendrick never comes off the field. He is the ultimate team player. Defenses have to double and sometimes even triple team him to keep him from scoring. With all of that he still has close to 700 yards of total offense.
“He (Rogers) is talented at the WR position but also is a very tenacious DB. Oran is our slash. Whatever way you can score a touchdown Oran has done it. He is a great slot receiver as well as a tail back. He also never comes off the field,” Nally said.
The coach credited those three to leading their team to success.
