Local Roundup: Westwood remains unbeaten in district with Saturday win

BETHEL — The Westwood volleyball team remained unblemished in District 19-2A play Saturday, sweeping Crockett 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-20).

Mi’Kayla Benson led the Lady Panthers with seven kills, while Natali Muniz added six in the victory.

Heather Wooden had a team-best 14 assists, with Lacey Wooden leading Westwood with 13 digs.

The Lady Panthers host their final home regular-season game of the season today when they welcome in Trinity. It will also be the team’s “Dig Pink” breast cancer awareness night.

Subvarsity action is set to kick off at 4:30 p.m.



CAYUGA 3, Dawson 0

The seventh-ranked Cayuga volleyball team made quick work of Dawson Saturday, sweeping the Lady Bulldogs 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-10).

Danielle Anderson had 14 kills and two aces to lead the Cayuga attack, while Shawnta Knox had 12 kills, five digs and two aces of her own.

Molly Griffey had six kills to go along with her 28 assists, while Mary Davis finished with four kills. Cory McCulloch led the team with 11 digs.

Cayuga (25-8, 11-0) hosts Kerens today, with games beginning at 5 p.m.



H.S. CROSS COUNTRY

The Neches boys’ cross country showed very well in the Fairfield meet over the weekend, led by Simon Traylor’s 26th-place finish.

Traylor led the Tigers with a time of 19 minutes, 12 seconds, followed by Harley Oakley’s 28th-place finish in 19:18.

Diego Hernandez was third for Neches in 29th-place, finishing the course in 19:21.

Jasper Henderson (20:33), Jacob Gochnour (20:47) and Charles Barker (20:58) rounded out the Neches squad.

Tanner Davis led the Neches junior high boys, finishing 12th.

Neches travels to Crockett Wednesday and then goes to New Summerfield for district Oct. 24.
