H.S. Basketball: Cayuga star Anderson verbally commits to Hartford

The Cayuga athletic program is sending another player to the Division I level. This time, however, it’s a Wildcat basketball star.

Wildcat senior Preston Anderson committed verbally to Hartford (Conn.) University Tuesday, and said he plans to sign with the school on National Signing Day in February.

Anderson, a 6-foot, 6-inch guard who averaged 25 points per game for the Wildcats last season, also garnered interest from teams like Sam Houston State and Abilene Christian, but ultimately decided on Hartford.

He cited the program’s family atmosphere.

“The basketball team, they’re all one big family,” he said. “Nobody on the team is from Connecticut, they’re all from far away. I love the type of basketball they play, I think it fits me.”

Anderson joins a team that already has four Texans on its roster, from places like Austin and Houston.

He said the Hartford coaches see him as a forward/guard combo player, allowing him to use all of his skills while he is on the court.

But, he also said that they stressed that, if the situation called for it, he could bring the ball up the floor.

“I’m probably going to be just playing a 2, 3 and sometimes a 4,” he said. “But they said that if it’s needed I can get the rebound then bring it up the floor.”

Hartford plays in the American East Conference with teams like the Boston University, the University of New Hampshire and the University of Vermont.

The Hawks went 9-22 a season ago, but got seven of those wins in conference. Hartford fell to eventual conference champion Vermont in the semifinals, 77-73, in double overtime.

According to Anderson, he was the No. 1 target for the Hawks for his recruiting class.

“It makes me feel good, just to know that all the practice that me and my dad have done, that everything has just paid off,” he said.
