H.S. Football: Oakwood returns to action Saturday

The last time the Oakwood football team left the field, it did so with a sour taste in its mouth.

The Panthers dropped their last game against Jonesboro, 80-43, and have had almost two weeks to think about it.

Oakwood (3-2) returns to the field Saturday, when they welcome Emory-Wiener (3-3) for homecoming.

The Jaguars are coming off of a 54-27 win over Houston Clear Lake Christian, but like Oakwood had last week off.

In the loss to Jonesboro, Oakwood’s usually high-powered offense was held mostly quiet. The Panthers gained only 325 yards of offense, more than 100 yards below their season average.

Oakwood will more than likely look to be more balanced in their attack as well. Of those 325 yards, 278 were either ran for or passed for by quarterback Damiyne Durham.

The Panthers gave up 437 yards to Jonesboro, 313 of which came on the ground. Emory-Wiener presents a more balanced attack for Oakwood to consider.

On the year, the Jaguars are averaging 292 yards per game (155 rush/137 pass) and almost 40 points.

The Jaguars rushing attack is led by three players — Alex Niefield, Zack Lerner and Sean Kantor — all of whom have gained more than 260 yards this season.

Niefield is the team’s quarterback, having thrown for almost 800 yards and 14 touchdowns on the year. His main target is Jacob Silver, who has caught 19 passes for 421 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Kick-off is set for 5 p.m. Saturday at Panther Field.
