Herald-Press Game Balls: QB Clark shows growth in PHS blowout

The Palestine football team knew it had a good — if not great — rushing attack heading into this season.

What it didn’t know, was how much production it would get out of its quarterback, first-year starter Gee Clark.

If Friday night was any indication, the sophomore is coming along just fine.

Clark threw for 208 yards and three touchdowns, while throwing only five incompletions in Palestine’s 49-0 blowout win over Athens at Wildcat Stadium.

The 208 yards eclipsed Clark’s season total heading into the game, and he threw for 197 of those yards in the first half alone.

Now, about that Palestine rushing attack.

Junior Ben Luckett only carried the ball four times against the Hornets, hardly a yeoman’s workload.

But, he made every single one of those carries count — and then some.

Luckett ran for 111 yards and three touchdowns in the win and had only one carry go for less than 10 yards. That carry was a two-yard touchdown run, so he couldn’t go any farther.

Luckett also scored from 44 and 52 yards out, and had plenty of more yards in the return game. He also had a 52-yard punt return touchdown called back on a penalty.

For most of this season, it’s been Jeffrey Wilson lighting up opposing defenses on the ground for Elkhart.

But, on Friday, it was quarterback Kevin Kidd doing the majority of the damage.

Kidd ran for 122 yards on only nine carries in Elkhart’s 46-21 loss to Class 1A No. 4 Joaquin.

The senior signal-caller also ran for a touchdown in the loss.

A week after his offense was completely shut down by Elkhart, Grapeland quarterback Patrick Walker got the Sandies up and running again Friday.

Walker accounted for 245 of the Sandies 335 yards of total offense in Grapeland’s 42-34 loss to Leon.

Walker also ran for two touchdowns and threw for another. 199 of his yards came through the air, as he finished the game 12-of-18 passing in his most productive passing game of the season.
