H.S. Football: Palestine OL Thlang commits to ULM

The first of the area’s Class of 2014 football recruits has made a commitment.

Palestine offensive lineman Brian Thlang committed to the University of Louisiana at Monroe on Wednesday, days after attending the Warhawks camp with teammate Ben Luckett.

Thlang said he was won over at the camp with the ULM coaching staff.

“At first I was indecisive,” the junior-to-be said. “But the coaching staff there reminded me a lot of Palestine and I really enjoyed the coaches at the camp.”

Thlang, who was a first team all-state selection by the Associated Press for his play as a junior, is projected to be a center at the next level, though he said he could also play “possibly at guard.”

He helped anchor a Palestine offensive line that paved the way for the Wildcats to run for more than 200 yards per game in 2012.

The Warhawks went 8-5 a year ago, with a win over then top-10 Arkansas and close losses to both Baylor and Auburn.

The school is expected to expand its football facilities, Thlang said, something that made the decision easier.

“The visit was good,” he said. “It was a nice campus and the facilities were good, and they plan on building new things too for football.”

Thlang said that the plan as of now is for him to redshirt as a freshman, but he’s got his sights set on the field after that.

“I want to work hard and hopefully get a starting spot my sophomore or junior year,” he said.

ULM also has offers out to both Luckett and Palestine linebacker Jarrell Owens, as well as fellow Anderson County recruit Jeffrey Wilson.
