From the Sideline: Picking on the picks from Texas Football

(Continued)

CAYUGA WILDCATS, 6-A, DI

DCTF PICK: 3rd

MY PICK: 3rd

The Wildcats lost a ton of talent to graduation and, quite frankly, 2013 could be tough on first-year coach Russell Holden.

That said, 6-A isn’t a strong district, and while they won’t be on par with Italy or Kerens this season, Cayuga should have enough to dispatch of the other three district foes.

GRAPELAND SANDIES, 10-A, DI

DCTF PICK: 4th

MY PICK: 4th

Unlike 6-A, Grapeland doesn’t have the luxury of playing in an easy district. 10-A boasts two teams — Alto and West Sabine — in DCTF’s preseason top-10, and San Augustine is also historically strong.

Grapeland made a push a year ago with some young talent, and has that talent returning. But, the mountain may be too tall for even them to climb.

OAKWOOD PANTHERS, 16-6M, DI

DCTF PICK: 1st

MY PICK: 1st

The magazine tabs the Panthers at No. 7 in its state-wide poll for Division I six-man squads, and easily has them winning District 16.

That’s a no-brainer. This coming season’s senior class — led by all-everything Damiyne Durham — has always been the target class for greatness in Oakwood.
