Local Roundup: Elkhart sweeps Groveton, sets up big match vs. Westwood

— The Elkhart volleyball team made easy work of visiting Groveton Saturday, setting up a huge matchup today against Westwood.

The Lady Elks swept Groveton, 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-15), meaning both Elkhart and Westwood sit atop District 19-2A with perfect 3-0 records.

That game is set to begin around 6 p.m. today at Westwood High School.

Courtney Cheatham had another huge game for the Lady Elks in Saturday’s win over Groveton. The sophomore finished with nine kills, five aces, three blocks and an assist in the victory.

Robin Grant finished with six kills, while both Ryan Grimsley, Brooklyn Facklam and Megan Davis had four. Davis also finished with 10 assists.

Paige Huff had a team-high 13 assists to go with two kills and three aces for the Lady Elks (13-16, 3-0).

CAYUGA 3, Cross Roads 0

The eighth-ranked Cayuga volleyball team remained absolutely perfect in district play Friday, sweeping Cross Roads, 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-23).

The Ladycats have yet to drop a game in district play.

Shawnta Knox had a team-high 16 kills along with six aces and two blocks, while Danielle Anderson had nine kills, four aces and three blocks in the victory for Cayuga.

Molly Griffey had 25 assists to go with three kills, while Megan Davis had three blocks and a kill of her own.

Cayuga (7-0 in district) opens up the second round of district play today when Wortham comes to town. Matches begin at 5 p.m.


Haley Harroff turned in an 11th-place finish for the Neches cross country team Saturday at the LaPoynor meet, finishing the course in 15 minutes, 21 seconds.

On the varsity boys side, Juan Hernandez finished 15th overall in 19:28.

Tanner Davis finished third in the junior high boys race, while Jose Carazoles finished sixth.

The Tigers will run again Wednesday at the Elkhart meet at Elkhart High School.
