H.S. Softball: Neches advances to area after win

PALESTINE — The Neches Lady Tiger softball team used a big first inning and a strong pitching performance to advance to the area round of the playoffs with a 7-4 victory against Lovelady on Friday night.

The Lady Tigers started off quick as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

The lead came off six hits from Katie Greve, Mac Chapman, Kelsee Wade, Avery Nunn, Saraya Tiner and Kristen Dickson.

The Lady Tigers would hold on to their strong lead until the top of the fourth inning when Lovelady was able to cut the lead in half.

With the lead now at 4-2, Neches needed an answer for the surge by the Lady Lions.

In the bottom of that fourth inning, the Lady Tigers were able to answer the Lady Lions’ attempt with a tally of their own.

Chapman drove in Halea Kendrick, which gave Neches the 5-2 advantage.

Lovelady wouldn’t back down, though, as it was able to put across two more runs in the top of the sixth inning, cutting the Neches lead to 5-4.

But leave it to the Lady Tigers to be able to rally behind their players as they scored two more runs.

Wade was able to drive in Kylie Timmons with a single and Nunn drove in Chapman with a sacrifice fly, giving the Lady Tigers the 7-4 lead and eventual final score of the match.

On the mound for the Neches Lady Tigers, Katie Greve held down the Lovelady offense.

Greve pitched a complete game as she was able to strike out 11 batters with just one walk and giving up just seven hits.

The Lady Tigers look to keep their playoff momentum alive as they travel next to Lindale where they will take on Harleton in the area round of the playoffs.

The Lady Tigers will play a best 2-out-of-3 series against Harleton, and the series will start on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
