Roughnecks top Permian Basin in home opener

The expansion Anderson County Roughnecks impressed in their home debut Sunday, using a bend-but-don’t-break defense to earn a 38-25 win over Permian Basin at Palestine’s Wildcat Stadium.

On four different occasions the Roughnecks stopped the Skyforce in the red zone, holding Permian Basin to field goals.

The defense also picked off three passes, with Gwinn Dixon returning his for a defensive touchdown. The Roughnecks defense also recorded six sacks on the day.

Offensively, quarterback David Cummings was 13-of-18 passing, throwing three touchdowns and rushing for another. Leon Mickens had six catches for 46 yards and a touchdown, while Terrance Henry and Cameron Shead both also caught touchdown passes.

Shead led the rushing attacking for Anderson County as well, carrying the ball nine times for 78 yards, while D.J. Morrow ran for 72 yards and touchdown on eight carries.

Prior to the game, the Palestine Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting for the team, and Vietnam Veterans Chapter 991 handled the pregame flag-raising ceremonies.

Anderson County (2-1) travels to Temple Sunday to take on the Panthers at 3 p.m., and return home March 17 to take on Curry County. Kick-off for that game is at 3 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
