For the fourth-straight year, the Grapeland girls’ golf team is headed to state.
Behind medalist performances from Shelby Frauenberger and Jayde Westbrook, and solid scores up-and-down the lineup, the Sandiettes won the Class 1A, Region IV title Tuesday at the Brenham Country Club.
All five Sandiettes broke 100 on the second-and-final day of the two-day tournament, securing Grapeland’s team win over Weimar. Grapeland finished the tournament with a two-day score of 687 (347-340).
“I’m super proud of them,” GHS golf coach and athletic director Jerry Richards said. “They improved on their second day score and we’ve got one more chance at that state title. That’s what we’re asking for.”
Frauenberger shot an opening round 83 Monday, and the followed that up with an 85 on Tuesday to finish second overall. Westbrook followed-up her opening round 83 with an 86 on Tuesday to finish third overall.
Both Amy Brown and Kalee Walker shot a two-day total of 175, with Brown rebounding with a team-best 83 on Tuesday to follow up her opening round 92. Walker shot an 86 on Tuesday. Brown finished fourth overall, and Walker fifth.
Justine Dancer bettered her Monday score by five strokes on Tuesday, shooting a 99.
“The experience-factor paid off. They knew what they were capable of shooting and went out there and took care of business,” Richards said of the improvement in second-round scores. “A lot of teams experience pressure, and our girls show great poise.”
The state tournament will be held May 2 and May 3 at the Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin. Last year, on the same course, Grapeland finished second to Memphis. It was the Sandiettes’ second-straight silver medal finish.
