When he made the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches (TASCO) all-star team last month, Jose Cabrera was expecting to be one of two goalkeepers on his team.
Instead, due to a no-show, he went the full 80 minutes for the South team in Saturday’s game.
It was the end to a whirlwind weekend for the Palestine senior, whose South team fell to the North, 3-2, Saturday at Temple ISD’s Wildcat Stadium.
The North jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, before the North stormed back to close the gap before ultimately falling.
Cabrera was one of 44 players from the entire state selected to play in the game and experience the weekend, which included more than just soccer.
The players got to tour Scott and White Hospital in Temple on Thursday, and got another tour of parts of the Fort Hood military base on Friday, before returning for a banquet in their honor.
The game ends a spectacular season for Cabrera, who was a TASCO first-team Class 4A all-state selection at goalkeeper after being named District 35-4A Goalkeeper of the Year and leading Palestine to a share of the district title.
On the year, Cabrera kept 12 clean sheets.
