H.S. Baseball: Palestine falls short against Rusk, faces Groesbeck on Thursday at 7 p.m.

PALESTINE — With just a few games left in district play, Palestine’s baseball team was looking for a win to keep them in the hunt for the postseason.

The Wildcats fell just short of that, though, as they lost to the Rusk Eagles 3-1 on Tuesday night in Palestine.

Palestine was up against one of the better pitchers in their district, but despite that, the Wildcats were able to string together some offense.

Being able to get on base is something that is essential in baseball, and the Wildcats were able to do that. However, their struggle, as coach Austin Evans said, was driving in the runs that were eventually left aboard the bases.

“Being down 3-1 in that ballgame, I was proud of the boys for being able to change their approach as the game went on,” Evans said. “That’s a really, really good pitcher. He’s not going to leave you anything over the plate. Still being able to battle was great for us. Defense and pitching were great for us tonight, though.

“That’s the game of baseball, though,” he added. “Being able to put multiple guys on base is great, but we were doing it with one and two outs. We want to be able to get those guys on with no outs and be able to move them on over into scoring position to give us an opportunity down the stretch.”

The one run in the game came in the fourth inning for the Wildcats as the middle of their lineup got the job done. Brian Gummelt, Ryan Zavala, James David and Chico Herrod were able to get going and get the Wildcats on the board.

Even with the loss, the Wildcats are still in good shape for the postseason.

“The great thing about this week is we get a short week, and we’ll be back here on Thursday against Groesbeck,” Evans said. “Groesbeck, Fairfield and us are all tied for that second spot in district. We hold our own destiny to be the two seed, and we’re excited to be able to play a day earlier and get on a roll.”
