H.S. Powerlifting: Locals capture lifting titles at Elkhart meet

— Loads of local lifters flocked to Elkhart Saturday for the Elkhart Invitational powerlifting meet, with local schools capturing both team titles.

The host-Elks took home the boys’ crown with 40 points, topping Rusk by five points. Westwood captured the girls’ crown with 46 points, easily topping Rusk’s 26.

The Elkhart boys won the title despite having only one lifter — Cody Defore — win his weight class. The Elks captured four second-place spots and four third-place spots at the meet.

Defore won the 148-pound class, totaling 1,060 pounds on his three lifts. That was enough to best teammate Tate Molandes, who finished second with 925 pounds lifted.

Cayuga’s Blake Guldjord finished fourth in the class, lifting 890 pounds. As a team, the Wildcats finished third. Frankston’s Humberto Chavez was fifth.

Westwood’s Johney Phelps won the 114-pound class with 655 pounds lifted, while the Panthers’ Jamie Chan won the 165-pound class after lifting 1,005 pounds. That bested Elkhart’s Garrett Flanagan (965 pound) and Zack Gray (910 pounds), who finished second and third, respectively.

Elkhart’s Cullen Adams was fifth in the 165-pound class.

Cayuga’s Ty Tunstall gave the Wildcats one of their three first-place finishes with his victory in the 220-pound class. He lifted 1,235 pounds to win his class by more than 100 pounds.

Teammate Jacob Boyd finished third in the class, lifting 1,040 pounds. Frankston’s Justin Caldwell was fourth.

Daniel Jock’s win in the 275-pound class gave Cayuga its second gold. Jock lifted 1,225 pounds to best Elkhart’s Zack McFarland, who lifted 1,110 pounds to finish second. Frankston’s John Ross lifted 810 pounds for third.

Cayuga’s third gold came via Colton Moody, who was the lone competitor in the super-heavyweight division.

Frankston got its lone win from Caleb Terrell, who outlifted teammate Brice Harrington to capture the 132-pound class.

Terrell lifted 715 pounds for the win, while Harrington lifted 635. Elkhart’s Dalton Kassaw finished third, lifting 630 pounds.

In the 181-pound class, Frankston’s Caleb Williams lifted 1,090 pounds to finish second. Cayuga’s Carlos Aguinaga finished third, lifting 1,015 pounds.

Elkhart’s Rodrick Arceneaux lifted 1,160 pounds to finish second in the 198-pound weight class, while Frankston’s Brett Workman was third, lifting 900 pounds.

In the 242-pound class, Elkhart’s Jesse Underwood finished third with 945 pounds lifted. Westwood’s Trey Jenkins was fourth and Frankston’s J.J. Kummer fifth.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Panthers rode three wins and 10 top-five finishes to their easy team victory.

Malasha Cook won the 165-pound class as the lone competitor, lifting 480 pounds. Also winning uncontested for Westwood was Kierra Butler, who lifted 710 pounds to win the 220-plus-pound class.

Westwood’s third win came from Ciera Tillis, who lifted 865 pounds to best teammate Ty’eesha Dawkins (555 pounds) in the 220-pound class.

Palestine finished third as a team, edging Cayuga by two points.

The Ladycats got wins from Elizabeth Sorley, who lifted 495 pounds to win the 105-pound class, as well as from McKayla Sander, who lifted 625 pounds to win the 181-pound class.

Sander outlifted Westwood’s Jeanna Cordell, who finished second with 580 pounds, as well as Cayuga’s Jana Walthall, who lifted 565 pounds for third.

Palestine rounded out the top-five at 181 pounds with Kiontee Robinson and Mariah Castillo.

Cayuga got wins from Shelby Luce, who lifted 595 pounds to win the 114-pound class, besting Grapeland’s Julie Riess by 15 pounds for the gold.

Westwood’s Tori Bowden finished third in the class, lifting 350, while Taylor Wehling (Palestine) and Randi Orme (Frankston) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Cayuga’s second win came from Shaina Stotts, who won the 198-pound class uncontested, lifting 595 pounds.

Elkhart got a win from Chasity Chambless, who lifted 510 pounds to win the 132-pound class. She beat Palestine’s Taelor Maciel, who lifted 485 pounds and finished second. Maciel edged out Elkhart’s Harley Brim, who lifted 480 pounds.

Frankston’s Ali Carnes was fourth at 132 pounds, while Westwood’s Abby Phelps was fifth.

 Cayuga got a second-place finish from Ashlyn Statham in the 97-pound division. Statham lifted 355 pounds, edging out third-place finisher Samantha Mullins (Westwood), who lifted 350 pounds.

Elkhart’s Jenna Neel lifted 465 pounds to finish second in the 123-pound class, while Westwood’s Kiley Kennedy was third in that class, lifting 340 pounds.

Also medaling for Westwood was Jasmine Peralts, who finished second in the 148-pound class after lifting 355 pounds.
