After a seven-year absence from postseason play that ended last year, the Palestine baseball team opens up its second-straight playoff campaign Tuesday.
The Wildcats, who captured District 19-3A’s second seed with a defeat of Fairfield Friday, will open the postseason again Diboll in a best-of-three series.
The series begins at 7 p.m. Thursday in Central Heights, followed by Game 2 at 7 p.m. Friday at Bullard High School. Game 3, if necessary, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday back in Bullard.
Diboll finished third in the ultra-competitive District 20-3A, behind Lufkin Hudson and Carthage, both of whom are ranked in the state’s top-10 by texashsbaseball.com. Hudson is ranked No. 7 by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association (THSBCA) in its final poll.
The winner of the series will then take on the winner of District 18-3A, which was unknown at press time.
In Class 2A, Elkhart opens up the playoffs Thursday as well.
The Elks, ranked 10th in the final THSBCA state poll for Class 2A, take on Hemphill at 7 p.m. Thursday at Morris Frank Park in Lufkin.
Elkhart tied for the district title in District 19-2A with Central Heights, but lost the first round bye on a coin flip. Hemphill finished third in District 20-2A.
Game 2 if set for 7 p.m. Friday back at Morris Frank Park. If necessary, Game 3 would be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Morris Frank.
The winner of the three-game series will face Sabine, which won District 18-2A, in the area round.
