The Westwood girls’ basketball team scored 18 points in the final quarter and got a double-double from Mi’Kayla Benson as the Lady Panthers opened their season with a 60-56 win over Buffalo.
Benson finished with a team-high 20 points and 11 rebounds in the victory, while Natali Muniz had 11 points, eight assists, six rebounds and four steals to fill up the stat sheet.
Alexis Hatten had eight points and six rebounds, while Marialle Boles had six points and six rebounds for Westwood in the win.
The Lady Panthers (1-0) play in the Corsicana tournament beginning today.
SLOCUM 71, Laneville 34
The 15th-ranked Slocum girls’ basketball team got huge nights from Landry Lane and Valarie Larkin, and moved to 3-0 with a 71-34 win over Laneville Tuesday.
Lane had 26 points in the victory, while Larkin had 13. Brice Sizemore and Kayti Jones each had seven points, while Britni Lively had six.
Slocum (3-0) opens up its home tournament today.

Laneville 57, SLOCUM 56
The Slocum boys’ basketball team got edged by Class 1A, Division II No. 6 Laneville Tuesday, 57-56.
Nathan Edwards led the way for Slocum with 17 points, while Conor Dickson had 13 and Jason Neal had 12.
Slocum (0-1) opens up its home tournament today.
NECHES 57, Eustace 52
Behind a double-double from Devin Kanetzky and a big night from Serge Kanetzky, Neches opened up the 2012 season with a 57-52 win over Eustace Tuesday.
Devin Kanetzky had 24 points and 12 rebounds, both team highs, in the win, while Serge Kanetzky had 16 points and eight assists.
Jake Sparkman had six points and 10 rebounds, while Harley-Oakley Collins had five points, six steals and four assists.
Neches (1-0) returns to action Friday Sabine, with the junior varsity beginning at 4 p.m., followed by the varsity girls and varsity boys.
