Elkhart has a new face to shine down on its women’s basketball program.
Cori Smith will be taking over the program after spending the last season in Palestine as the assistant varsity basketball coach, as well as the track coach.
“My number one goal is to get the numbers up in the basketball program at EHS,” Smith said. “I know that they’ve been low at Elkhart. I want to build the program from the bottom up. They’ve been through so many coaches in the past few years. I’m looking to stay there and actually start something. Elkhart has such good girl athletes. They just need someone who cares about the program and who can get it to the same level that the other girls’ programs are.”
Going from Palestine to Elkhart will be only a little bit of a change for Smith, as she looks to keep up her positive vibe on the sports program.
“I’m excited to be here and see what I can do to get this basketball program started,” Smith said.
Smith got her coaching career started four and a half hours away from Elkhart in Fredericksburg. While in Fredericksburg, Smith put on a couple of camps there. After her stint in Fredericksburg, she was hired as the women’s volleyball coach at Crockett High School and was there during 2010 and 2011. Most recently, Smith was at Palestine High School as the assistant varsity basketball coach and track coach.
