H.S. Soccer: Palestine boys inching toward district title

It’d be hard to make the Palestine/Jacksonville boys’ soccer rivalry any bigger, but for the Wildcats it just might be Friday.

Behind a first half goal from UT Tyler-signee Kaleb Garcia and stellar defensive play from goalkeeper Jose Cabrera and defenders Paul Webb and Brandon Fierro, the Wildcats knocked off Nacogdoches Tuesday, 1-0.

With the win, the Wildcats move three points clear of the Dragons in the district table with a 6-1 record to Nacogdoches’ 5-2 mark.

With very winnable games against Center and Diboll to end the season next week, Palestine’s final significant road block comes Friday at the Tomato Bowl as the Wildcats look for their first district title since 1999, and the program’s first-ever since Palestine made the drop down to Class 3A.

That title in 1999 is the program’s lone district crown.

Kick-off in that game is set for 5:30 p.m.

The game following that won’t be without its stakes either, as the Palestine girls’ soccer team looks to rebound from a 1-0 loss to the Lady Dragons Tuesday.

The Ladycats could possibly clinch a playoff berth with a win over the Maidens Friday, assuming that Hudson can also win its game against Diboll.
