H.S. Basketball: The Lady Mustangs of Slocum improve their season record as they beat Frankston on Tuesday night

SLOCUM — The Slocum Lady Mustangs squared off against Division 2A Frankston Indians at Slocum HS on Tuesday night and came away with a victory, winning 64-49.

Slocum played their best basketball of the season in the first quarter, taking an 18-5 lead before Frankston could turn up their defense.  

Slocum held a commanding lead of 23-10 at the end of the quarter despite numerous fouls by both teams and a pressing man-to-man defense by Frankston. Both teams were in the bonus by the second quarter.

Frankston slowed the Slocum Ladies down in the second quarter but were not able to cut into the lead.  Slocum scored 14 points to Frankston’s 10.  The score at halftime was Slocum 37, Frankston 22.

The second half began with the Frankston defense holding  Slocum scoreless from the floor for five minutes before Valerie Larkin could hit a three point basket to add to an earlier free throw.

Landry Lane and Kamryn Vickers both hit one point each to round out the scoring in the third quarter at six points for Slocum.  

Frankston picked up their game in the third and scored 13 points to narrow the lead. Eight points was as close as Frankston could get to the Lady Mustangs.  

Katelynn Hogan opened the fourth quarter for Slocum with a quick layup and followed with another layup to get the Lady Mustangs running again.  

Sitting out for the middle of the game in foul trouble, Hogan finished the night with 10 points.  

At the five-minute mark of the fourth quarter, the referees whistle had blown 18 times in the second half with both teams in foul trouble.

 Slocum scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to 14 for Frankston.  

The high scorer for Slocum was Valerie Larkin with 16 points.  

Kamryn Vickers had another good night, coming off the bench and scoring  12 points for the Lady Mustangs.

Slocum’s next match is against Woden at 6 p.m. Friday.
