H.S. Baseball: 10 Palestine players earn all-district honors

Even in his first — and only —season on the Palestine baseball team, newcomer Zane Worsencroft made an impact.

The coaches in District 19-3A took notice as well, and Worsencroft was honored as the district’s Defensive Player of the Year on the league’s all-district team released recently.

He was one of nine Palestine players honored with spots after the Wildcats finished second in the league, making the playoffs for the second-straight year.

Junior pitcher Chico Herod, senior first baseman Austin Brown, senior shortstop Juan Trejo, senior newcomer Devon Harris and junior utility-man Brian Gummelt all were honored with first team all-district spots for their play during the 2013 season.

Sophomore catcher Ryan Zavala, senior third baseman Angel Trejo and sophomore outfielder James David earned second team honors, while Tyler Somner was an honorable mention selection.

The Wildcats lost in the bi-district round of the playoffs to Diboll, which is playing in the regional finals for a shot at the state tournament.

Rusk senior Michael Crews was named the district’s MVP, while Fairfield sophomore Chance Carrol earned Offensive Player of the Year honors.

Groesbeck senior Clayton Davis was named Pitcher of the Year, and Groesbeck’s Colton Swick and Mexia’s Tre Craig shared Newcomer of the Year honors.

Fairfield’s Caleb Seires was named Freshman of the Year, while the Rusk coaching staff earned Staff of the Year.

PHS hosting baseball camp

The Palestine High School baseball program will host two camps next month for aspiring players.

Monday and Tuesday, PHS coach Austin Evans will host a beginner’s camp for boys ages 6 through 9.

The second camp will be held Wednesday and Thursday, and will be an advanced camp for any player from 10 years old to an incoming freshman.

The camps, which costs $25, will run from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. both days. Those who pre-register will receive a camp t-shirt.

For more information or to reserve a spot, contact Evans at 903-724-4868, or via email at
