Local Roundup: Palestine boys win Fairfield track meet

The Palestine boys track team captured eight gold medals — including two from Mason Munoz, Jonnie Dean and Jose Romero — as the Wildcats scored 240 points to capture the title at the Fairfield track meet Friday.

Munoz won both the 800 meters and 1,600 meters at the meet, while Romero won the 110-meter hurdles, and was on the gold medal-winning mile relay team with Chris Weaver, Marquis Clark and Jadarrius Beasley.

Dean won the individual 400-meter dash and also captured gold in the triple jump. He also finished second in the 800 meters behind Munoz.

Darrius Stephens captured gold in the long jump, while Billy James finished second and Isaiah Mitchell fourth. Stephens also finished fifth in the triple jump.

Tyler Barnard captured gold in the 3,200 meters, with Denis Quincin finishing second. Barnard also finished third and Quincin fourth in the 1,600 meters.

Beasley captured two silver medals to go along with his mile relay gold, finishing second in the individual 200 meters and running on the 4-by-100-meter relay team that finished second along with Weaver, Paul Barksdale and Ivory Brown.

Barksdale finished third behind Beasley in the 200 meters and second as well in the 100 meters, while Brown captured silver in the 400 meters behind Dean.

Romero finished third in the 300-meter hurdles go along with his gold in the 110s, while Walter Sheridan grabbed silver in the discus, followed by teammate Bryce Newman.

Sheridan also finished fourth in the shot put, with fellow-Wildcat Eric Gonzales fifth.

Dakota Mancinis and Nick Clewis-Jones finished second and third, respectively, in the pole vault, while Marcus Robinson grabbed a bronze medal in the high jump.

The Palestine team of Weaver, Robinson, Bill James and Ben Luckett finished just out of the medals in the 4-by-200-meter relay, finishing fourth.

Palestine, which has now won 14-straight regular season meets, returns to action March 21 when they host the Dogwood Relays at Wildcat Stadium.
