Local Roundup: Cayuga cross country headed back to regional meet

— The Cayuga boys’ cross country team is headed back to regionals for a second-straight year, after the Wildcats finished second as a team at the District 19-A meet in Athens Monday.

Matthew McNeil paced the Wildcats with a scalding finish in 17 minutes, 37 seconds, earning him an individual district championship as well.

Justin Gilpin finished fifth and Rance Rushing 11th for Cayuga, while Brant Cox (20th) and Jacob Grasch (21st) rounded out the Cayuga scoring five runners.

Cayuga’s Ashlyn Statham also is headed to regionals after finishing 10th individually in the girls’ race. Statham edged teammate Sidney Green, who finished fifth.

It’s the second-straight regionals appearance for Statham.

Wilson nominated for state-wide honor


After his 401-yard performance Friday against Franklin, Elkhart running back Jeffrey Wilson is up for a pretty big honor.

Wilson has been selected as one of 10 players state-wide to be nominated for the Gridiron Legends Player of the Week award, presented by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine.

Elkhart fans can help Wilson win the award, which is all based on fan vote.
