H.S. Track and Field: Elkhart finishes with two medals at state tournament

The Elkhart Lady Elks came away with two medals in the state competition in Austin this weekend.

Before heading down to Austin, Elkhart coach Kodi Huff said she wanted the 4x400M team and senior Paige Fillmore — who participated in the 300M hurdles — to do just that.

The 4x400M relay team placed third out of all of the Class 2A teams in attendance with a time of 4:02.25.

“This was huge for us,” Huff said. “It just shows the girls that hard work does pay off. Plus, it gets them excited about the years to come.”

For Fillmore, she competed in both the 4x400M relay and the 300M hurdles. In her first two attempts at the state level, she wasn’t able to make it into the top three to receive a medal. But for Fillmore, it seemed that the third time was indeed the charm.

Fillmore placed second in the 300M hurdles to capture a silver medal and earn the title of the second fastest 300M hurdler in Class 2A in the state of Texas.

Huff said with Fillmore being the oldest athlete on the relay team, it will be hard to replace the senior.

“Paige had a huge impact on the team,” Huff said. “She was a great leader and showed the girls that with hard work, they can get better and better. She ran her best time ever in the 300 Hurdles and her second best split in the mile relay at the state meet. This shows the girls that they will just get better over the next few years.”

Kimber Douglas, Monique Ashford and Tiffany Rosas completed the 4x400M relay team that competed at state.

As far as the future of the program goes, Huff said she has high hopes of next year’s talent.
