Local Roundup: Elkhart CC sweeps New Waverly meet titles

— Behind top-10 finishes from each their its top three runners, both the Elkhart boys’ and girls’ cross country teams took home meet titles from the New Waverly meet Wednesday.

Luis Banuelos’ second-place finish in 18 minutes, 21 seconds led the Elks, followed by Dillon Shaver (19:03) in eighth and Tanner Tutt (19:09) in ninth.

Rowdy Upchurch (15th) and Justin Bullard (21st) rounded out the Elkhart scoring runners in the race.

On the girls’ side, Harley Brim’s third-place finish in 13:57 led the Lady Elks, with Anna Clark finishing sixth in 14:11. Kayla Johnson (14:26) also finished top-10 in eighth.

Rounding out the scoring five for the Lady Elks was Joli Ballew (15th) and Paige Huff (16th).

The Elkhart girls’ junior varsity also captured the meet title, placing all five scoring runners in the top seven.

Courtney Cheatham led the team in second, while Paige Fillmore finished third.

Tiffany Rosas and Megan Davis finished fourth and fifth, respectively, while Alex Ferrari finished seventh.

Dalton Kassaw’s eighth-place finish led the Elk boys’ JV squad.

The Elks host their home meet Wednesday at Elkhart High School, with action starting at 1 p.m.


Tickets for the 2012 UIL state championship games to be played at Cowboys Stadium are now on sale.

The games are schedule for Dec. 14 (Class 3A, Division I) and Dec. 20 through Dec. 22. A ticket for the Class 3A, Division I game is $12.

Both Class 1A title games and the Class 2A, Division II game will be on Dec. 20.

On Dec. 21, the Class 2A, Division I game is set for noon, to be followed by the Class 3A, Division II game and then the Class 4A, Division II contest.

Dec. 22 will feature the Class 4A, Division I game to be followed by both the Class 5A games.

All-day tickets for Dec. 20 through Dec. 22 are $15.

The six-man state title games are set for Dec. 15 at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene. Tickets for that day are $5 and can be purchased only at the gate.
