Four athletes from the Dogwood Circle took part in the boys Powerlifting State Championship Saturday in Abilene.
For Elkhart, Cody Defore, Chris Box and Zach Gray took part in the competition and performed well. Defore finished in sixth place in the 148-pound weight class. Box finished 10th in the 165-pound weight class, and Gray finished seventh in the 181-pound weight class.
Elkhart coach Glen Tunstall said he was proud of how his athletes performed, adding their time at the state competition will help them in the future.
“I think it was a big honor on their part making it to state,” Tunstall said. “Cody had a great shot of medalling, but fell just short and got sixth, but he still had a good meet. Gray, he’s just a sophomore, placed sixth and then Box, he’s a junior, he finished 10th out of 18 guys.
“I think it’s a huge confidence booster for them that they’ll be able to make it back next year,” Tunstall added. “We carried two guys, too, as alternates that finished third in the regional meets, so it helped them also. I think we’re going to be able to really compete for the team championship next year if we can get five guys to qualify for state.”
The Westwood Panthers sent Johney Phelps to State as well and he finished in fifth place in the 114-pound weight class. He squatted 370 pounds, bench pressed 185 pounds and was able to dead lift 340 pounds.
